City Council Faces Tax Hike Amid Budget Discussions

During a recent city council meeting, significant discussions centered around the implications of a reduced assessment ratio on local property taxes, the renewal of a retail cannabis license, and the upcoming fiscal year budget.

Councillor Grant raised concerns regarding the ramifications of being below the state-mandated threshold, particularly for homestead property owners. He noted that those receiving homestead and veterans exemptions would experience a reduction in benefits, potentially leading to an increase in their tax bills. For instance, residents could see an increase of approximately $50 due to the cut in homestead benefits, as the city adjusts personal property assessments in line with the lower ratio. This shift could result in a heavier tax burden on real estate.

The council also unanimously approved the renewal of a retail cannabis license for Senesimea South, LLC, with all department heads expressing satisfaction with the application. This decision reflects the city's ongoing support for the cannabis industry.

Additionally, the council conducted a first reading of the fiscal year budget, which includes the General Fund, Enterprise Fund, and TIF Fund. Councillor Berry moved to approve the first reading, with a second reading scheduled for June 14, 2023.

The meeting concluded with a motion to cancel the July 5, 2023, city council meeting, allowing for a break before the next regular meeting on July 19. The council also discussed the remaining American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, emphasizing the need to commit these one-time funds effectively as part of the budget process.
