Community rallies for sustainable long term care solutions

During a recent government meeting, community members from Molokai voiced urgent concerns regarding healthcare services, particularly for the island's elderly population. Courtney Dimaggio, a registered nurse and local resident, highlighted the pressing need for a sustainable long-term care facility, emphasizing that while progress has been made, significant challenges remain in securing ongoing funding.

Dimaggio pointed out that many individuals requiring long-term care depend on Medicaid, which offers inadequate reimbursement rates. She urged the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) to explore innovative funding solutions to ensure the facility's sustainability. \"We need to start thinking outside the box,\" she stated, stressing the importance of community involvement and collaboration with various entities, including Halemokua, a skilled nursing facility on Maui, which is set to support an adult day health program on Molokai.

The discussion also touched on the broader healthcare crisis on the island, exacerbated by the departure of healthcare providers. In response, the Molokai Health Education Center has ramped up training programs for medical professionals, including a new medical assistant program and upcoming courses for certified nursing assistants (CNA) and licensed practical nurses (LPN). Dimaggio noted that these initiatives could help address staffing shortages, provided there are adequate job opportunities available locally.

Community member Carla D'Angelo raised concerns about accessibility to OHA services, particularly for elders who struggle with technology. She emphasized the need for more support in navigating registration processes, highlighting the barriers faced by many in the community.

The meeting underscored a collective determination among Molokai residents to advocate for their healthcare needs and to seek sustainable solutions that prioritize the well-being of their kupuna (elders). As the community continues to push for improvements, the call for collaboration and innovative thinking remains paramount.
