Lieutenant Chapman champions cancer prevention for firefighters

In a recent government meeting, Lieutenant Keith Chapman of the Escambia County Fire Rescue (ECFR) was recognized for his exceptional commitment to cancer prevention and education within the firefighting community. Having battled cancer himself, Chapman has become a passionate advocate for early detection and screening, dedicating significant time to instruct new firefighters on the risks associated with their profession. His proactive approach includes washing his gear and equipment after each response, setting a standard for safety and hygiene.

Chapman has also contributed educational materials to the county medical clinic, emphasizing the importance of thorough screenings during annual physicals for firefighters. His mentorship extends to fellow firefighters diagnosed with similar cancers, providing guidance and support throughout their treatment journeys. His leadership and dedication have been highlighted as deserving of multiple awards annually.

The meeting also acknowledged the heroic efforts of a team of firefighters who responded to a water rescue incident on April 6, 2023. Firefighters Steve Clark and Anthony Williams entered the water to rescue multiple individuals in distress, while Firefighter Paramedic Kenny Pike oversaw the advanced life support care provided to three patients who were unconscious and in cardiac arrest. The team’s successful intervention during this emergency situation earned them company citations for their exceptional teamwork and life-saving efforts.
