Firefighters save life in dramatic cardiac arrest rescue

In a heartwarming display of community service, the East County Fire Rescue (ECFR) crew went above and beyond during a recent emergency call. On a particularly cold evening, a 9-year-old boy, who had not eaten since lunch, was comforted by firefighters who arranged for a pizza to be delivered for him and his grandmother. While the situation at their residence was being resolved, the child was given a full tour of the fire engine and allowed to sit in the warm cab, ensuring he felt safe and cared for during a difficult time.

This incident highlights the compassionate efforts of ECFR personnel, who routinely engage in acts of kindness beyond their primary duties.

In a separate incident on September 19, 2023, Lieutenant Paramedic Jacob Mulligan and the crew of Engine 4 responded to a critical call involving a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, they faced challenges accessing the patient, who was located in a bathroom and experiencing significant blood loss. Tragically, the patient went into cardiac arrest approximately 13 minutes after contact was made. Thanks to Lieutenant Mulligan's swift and decisive actions, which included administering life-saving interventions and medications, the patient was successfully resuscitated and stabilized before being transferred to Life Flight.

In recognition of their exemplary service, Lieutenant Mulligan will receive a Distinguished Service Medal, and the entire crew of Engine 4, which included Lieutenant Dale Dirks, Firefighter Kenny Fell, and Firefighter John Kiena, will be awarded a Company Citation with Ribbon for their teamwork in saving a life. This commendation underscores the critical role that first responders play in emergency situations, often under intense pressure.
