Fitchburg faces affordable housing crisis as community navigators assist struggling residents

A volunteer housing navigator program, in partnership with Joining Forces for Families, has begun operating at the Boys and Girls Club, providing assistance to older adults seeking housing. Despite only serving a few individuals so far, the program aims to address the pressing need for affordable housing options.

One case highlighted involved a senior with a limited income of $700, struggling to find affordable housing, as the lowest available option was $1,300 per month. The commission is actively exploring rent subsidies and other resources to assist those in need, but the overall lack of affordable housing remains a significant challenge.

As the meeting concluded, members reiterated the importance of gathering more information on funding and housing solutions, underscoring the ongoing commitment to support Fitchburg's aging population amidst these pressing issues.
