Cedar Street to be renamed Devon T McNeil III Way to honor anti-violence efforts

The Washington D.C. Committee of the Whole meeting on March 21, 2023, focused on a significant proposal to honor the memory of Devon T. McNeil III by designating the 1400 block of Cedar Street Southeast as "Devon T. McNeil III Way." This symbolic naming aims to commemorate the young boy's tragic death due to gun violence and to raise awareness about the ongoing issue of community violence.

Devon McNeil was just eleven years old when he was fatally shot on July 4, 2020, while returning to his mother after a day out. The incident occurred during a chaotic moment when four men mistakenly believed they were responding to a threat in their neighborhood. The senseless act of violence not only claimed Devon's life but also sparked widespread outrage and sorrow within the community.

In response to this tragedy, the McNeil family, alongside community leaders, established the Devon McNeil Memorial Fund in April 2021. This fund, created with the support of Magistrate Judge Mary Grace Rook and her husband, Al Rook, aims to provide at-risk youth in Wards 7 and 8 with opportunities to engage in social programs, sports, arts, and education. The initiative seeks to break the cycle of violence and foster a safer environment for young people in the area.

The proposed street naming is intended to serve as a lasting reminder of the need to address gun violence and its impact on communities, particularly in neighborhoods east of the River. If approved by the committee, this designation will not only honor Devon's memory but also reinforce the community's commitment to preventing further tragedies.
