School district secures $7.9 million grant for 25 electric buses amid driver shortages

A significant $7.9 million investment in electrifying the fleet of Washington D.C. buses was announced during the recent Committee of the Whole Performance Oversight Hearing, chaired by Phil Mendelson. This funding will facilitate the procurement of 25 new electric buses, which will be equipped with advanced camera technology. Currently, the district operates ten electric buses, but officials noted that delays in manufacturing mean the new buses may not arrive until the end of the calendar year.

The discussion highlighted ongoing challenges within the transportation sector, including a critical shortage of motor vehicle operators. With 87 vacancies still unfilled, the district recently offered 34 positions at a hiring fair, indicating a pressing need for drivers and attendants.

Concerns were also raised regarding a spike in complaints about bus service, particularly regarding unprofessional conduct among staff. The number of complaints surged to 399 in fiscal year 2022, a stark increase from just 49 in fiscal year 2021. Officials committed to investigating these complaints thoroughly and holding individuals accountable as necessary.
