Utility Board Embraces AI for Predictive Grid Maintenance

During a recent government meeting, the utility director presented an innovative proposal involving a collaboration with ESmart Systems to enhance the maintenance of overhead electrical lines through advanced technology. The initiative aims to utilize aerial photography and artificial intelligence for predictive maintenance, which could significantly improve the reliability of the electrical grid.

The proposed proof of concept will involve inspecting 928 overhead distribution facilities at an estimated cost of $50,000. This initiative is expected to provide valuable training for the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) department, enabling staff to manage aerial assets more effectively. The utility director emphasized that transitioning from a preventative to a predictive maintenance program could lead to better budgeting and resource allocation in the future.

The director also addressed concerns regarding the security of data shared with ESmart, a company based in Norway. He assured board members that the contract includes provisions to safeguard information, similar to existing cloud security measures. The legal review of the agreement is currently underway, and once completed, the utility will be able to proceed with the partnership.

If the proof of concept proves successful, the utility may expand the program to cover the entire system, potentially allowing for in-house aerial photography and further cost savings. The board is expected to revisit the proposal for approval following the initial phase.
