Mayor declares August 2024 National Black Business Month

During a recent city council meeting, Mayor Patty King proclaimed August 2024 as National Black Business Month in Flagler Beach, emphasizing the importance of supporting Black-owned businesses. This proclamation aligns with a nationwide initiative aimed at recognizing the contributions of Black entrepreneurs to the economy and promoting diversity and equity.

Mayor King highlighted the significance of fostering an inclusive environment that values diversity, noting that this is the sixth such proclamation the city has issued, following similar acknowledgments from neighboring municipalities. The mayor also shared insights from her recent visit to Montgomery, where she received the same proclamation, and discussed the critical role of access to capital for minority entrepreneurs. She mentioned partnerships with micro-lenders and educational institutions, including the University of Florida, to provide mentorship and resources to help small businesses thrive.

King reflected on her personal journey as a graduate of the University of Florida's business school, where she was the oldest African American to graduate. She emphasized the need for mentorship and support for minority businesses, which often face challenges in their early stages. The mayor concluded by reiterating her commitment to leveraging her network to assist these communities in building sustainable businesses.
