Firefighters honored for heroic rescue under gunfire

During a recent government meeting, the Flagger Beach Fire Department recognized the bravery of three firefighters for their heroic actions during a life-threatening incident. Lieutenant Greg Evans, Driver Engineer Jamal Prince, and Firefighter Paramedic David Lawrence were awarded the prestigious Bravery Award for their quick response to a shooting that occurred on May 15.

The incident unfolded when an altercation outside the Flagger Beach Fire Department station escalated into gunfire, with one bullet striking the station's bay door. Despite the danger, the on-duty crew quickly alerted dispatch and sheltered in place. When citizens informed them that a young man had been shot and was lying in the street, the firefighters made the critical decision to prioritize the victim's life over their own safety.

Deputy Chief Cox detailed how the team entered the hostile environment to provide medical assistance, unaware of the shooter's whereabouts. Their swift actions allowed them to extract the victim from the street and continue life-saving measures in the safety of the fire station's apparatus bay. Cox emphasized that their bravery was instrumental in saving the young man's life.

The meeting concluded with heartfelt congratulations from the board and community members, highlighting the professionalism and dedication of the Flagger Beach Fire Department staff.
