In a recent city council meeting, Debbie Espinosa, President and CEO of Find Food Bank, provided a comprehensive update on the organization's efforts to combat food insecurity in the Coachella Valley, particularly in Rancho Mirage. Espinosa highlighted the alarming statistics regarding food insecurity in the region, noting that approximately 84% of children in local public schools qualify for free or reduced lunch, and about 15% of Rancho Mirage's population is food insecure.
Find Food Bank, which has been operational since 1983, serves around 120,000 individuals monthly, with a significant portion being children and seniors. Espinosa emphasized the importance of partnerships with local governments, including Rancho Mirage, to enhance food distribution and outreach services. She mentioned the launch of the SB 1383 food rescue program, aimed at diverting food waste to those in need, and the ongoing efforts to raise awareness about food insecurity in the community.
The meeting also featured a presentation from Lift to Rise, a nonprofit focused on affordable housing in the Coachella Valley. Ian Gabriel and Jessica Pollard outlined their 2024-2026 action plan, which aims to reduce rent burdens by producing 10,000 affordable housing units by 2028. They reported significant progress since 2018, with over 1,200 units currently under construction and plans for an additional 7,500 units by mid-2026. The organization is advocating for policies that support affordable housing development and has mobilized community residents to engage in advocacy efforts.
Community members voiced their support for both initiatives, emphasizing the interconnectedness of food and housing insecurity. Speakers highlighted the urgent need for affordable housing solutions, particularly in light of rising rents and economic challenges faced by residents. The council expressed its commitment to continue collaborating with both Find Food Bank and Lift to Rise to address these pressing issues in the community.
The meeting underscored the critical role of local partnerships in tackling food insecurity and housing challenges, with a shared goal of fostering a healthier and more stable community for all residents.
