Nonprofit transforms lives of LGBTQ youth through housing support

At a recent government meeting, Laura Raines and Cammy Krueger from the nonprofit Choosing Our Roots (CORE) presented their initiatives aimed at providing housing security for LGBTQ+ youth in Anchorage, Alaska. Krueger, who serves as the co-director of programming, highlighted the significant impact of municipal support over the past few years, particularly in funding the acquisition of a six-plex property named Safe Route Anchorage.

This facility has been transformed into a transitional housing program for young adults aged 18 to 24 who face housing insecurity. Krueger emphasized the importance of creating an affirming environment for these individuals, many of whom have struggled to find supportive services that allow them to live authentically.

The funding from the municipality has also enabled CORE to host community engagement events, fostering a sense of belonging and creativity among participants. Recent activities included a mending class and an upcoming foraged tea party led by an Indigenous educator, focusing on ethical foraging practices. Future plans include creative workshops and discussions with local queer authors.

Krueger expressed gratitude for the visible queer representation in leadership roles within the community, noting its positive influence on both individuals and families. This representation contributes to a more inclusive environment, making Anchorage a safer and more accepting place for LGBTQ+ youth.
