Urgent call for action on school budget crisis

During a recent Lakeville School Committee meeting, concerns regarding a significant budget discrepancy of $800,000 were brought to light, prompting urgent calls for immediate action. Maureen Candido, a member of the Lakeville Board of Selectmen, submitted a statement expressing her inability to attend the meeting due to a work conflict but emphasized the critical nature of the issue at hand.

Candido highlighted that the select board had received numerous concerns from the public about the school budget, which led to a unanimous decision to advocate for an audit to investigate the irregularities causing the accounting error. She stressed that while the select board can suggest actions, only the regional school committee has the authority to implement solutions. Candido urged the committee to conduct a root cause analysis promptly, stating that the issue cannot wait until the committee reconvenes after the summer.

In her statement, she implored the board to find actionable solutions that would not adversely affect teachers, students, or particularly vulnerable students requiring additional support. She acknowledged that while the committee members may not be directly responsible for the budget issues, they hold the responsibility to resolve them expediently.

Additionally, community members expressed their desire for timely updates regarding the appointment of a new director of special education, emphasizing the need for clarity before the upcoming school year. Bill Kowalski, a resident, voiced his disappointment over the lack of a vote on a matter that has been pending since March, while Richard Cameron thanked the committee for finally approving a generator, indicating a desire to move forward from past delays.

The meeting underscored the urgency for the school committee to address the budgetary concerns and communicate effectively with the community as they navigate these challenges.
