San Diego leads nation with groundbreaking gun safety ordinance

In a significant move towards enhancing gun safety and accountability, the San Diego City Council has unanimously approved the Ira Sharp Firearm Dealer Accountability Act. This ordinance mandates a more rigorous vetting process for vendors supplying firearms and ammunition to the city, requiring them to provide detailed documentation regarding their compliance with local, state, and federal laws.

Council Member Marni Von Wilpert, who spearheaded the initiative, emphasized the importance of ensuring that taxpayer dollars are not used to purchase firearms from vendors with questionable practices. The new requirements include thorough inspections of vendors' records by the Department of Justice, the state of California, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Vendors will also need to demonstrate how they prevent their products from being diverted to illegal markets and outline their policies to mitigate risks associated with straw purchases and firearms trafficking.

Council Member Woodburn praised Von Wilpert's leadership in reducing gun violence, highlighting that this ordinance positions San Diego as a national leader in gun violence prevention. The council's discussions underscored the alarming statistics regarding gun dealers, with reports indicating that a small percentage of dealers are responsible for a significant portion of crime guns in the country.

The ordinance not only applies to future contracts but also mandates that existing contracts comply with the new regulations. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that the city only engages with responsible vendors, thereby enhancing public safety.
