Community Center Revitalizes Space with Art and Education

In a recent meeting, community leaders discussed various initiatives aimed at enhancing local engagement and environmental awareness at the Akiak Outdoor Center. A significant highlight was the successful memorial event held for Dolores, which received positive feedback from her family, showcasing the community's commitment to honoring its members.

The center has established a marketing committee to boost reservations, which suffered during the pandemic. Efforts include advertising in the Tourist Guide and maintaining an active Facebook presence. Notably, the center received a surprise $5,000 donation from an anonymous benefactor, underscoring community support.

A key initiative discussed was the invasive species removal class held at the Outback Outreach Center, alongside plans for an outdoor classroom designed to educate participants about environmental impacts. The classroom will feature benches and gravel, providing a space for hands-on learning in nature.

Additionally, the center is preparing for a mural class scheduled for June 22, which aims to beautify the old garage building and transform it into a community art studio. The class, limited to 20 participants, will be led by a professional artist and will involve creating murals on movable plywood, allowing for flexibility in future installations.

The meeting also touched on the potential for future art classes, including larger projects that could utilize the space more effectively. Leaders expressed enthusiasm for expanding the center's offerings, fostering creativity, and enhancing community involvement in the arts.
