During a recent government meeting, concerns regarding the maintenance of local athletic fields were brought to the forefront. Staff members addressed the current state of the fields, which have raised alarms among community members. They confirmed that the fields are maintained regularly, with mowing occurring three times a week and irrigation seven days a week. However, the irrigation system is reportedly compromised, prompting the hiring of Haviland AG, an external vendor, to provide comprehensive maintenance services since August 2023. This includes soil testing and the application of herbicides and fertilizers.
Despite these efforts, the staff acknowledged challenges stemming from the retirement of the grounds foreman in 2021, who possessed the necessary pesticide applicator license and expertise. Since then, the district has struggled to find a qualified replacement, relying on third-party vendors for field treatment until the recent partnership with Haviland AG.
Community member Jennifer Baumann expressed her dissatisfaction with the current condition of the fields, stating they have never looked worse and highlighting safety concerns due to divots that could pose risks to children. She urged the council to consider changes to the maintenance approach, noting that neighboring areas have better-maintained fields.
Additionally, resident Carlos Lemos raised concerns about a proposed moratorium on new constructions and additions in Miami Shores, suggesting that many residents may be unaware of the implications of such a decision. He emphasized the need for more transparency and community engagement regarding this issue.
The discussions reflect a growing urgency among residents for improved athletic facilities and clearer communication from local government regarding development policies.
