Surtax hailed as game changer for county projects

In a recent government meeting, Okaloosa County officials highlighted the transformative impact of the local surtax on infrastructure and community projects. Commissioner Boyle emphasized the strong relationship between the county and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), noting that the surtax has enabled the county to propose projects that were previously dismissed. He expressed gratitude for the public's support of the half-cent surtax, which has provided essential funding for various initiatives.

Commissioner Cashman echoed these sentiments, reflecting on the challenges faced before the surtax was implemented. He pointed out that prior to its introduction, requests for basic repairs, such as pothole fixes, often went unaddressed for years. Cashman warned against political candidates who suggest eliminating the surtax, asserting that such a move would halt critical road projects and maintenance efforts.

The meeting also addressed procedural matters, including the election of a chair for the Value Adjustment Board. Following a legal opinion from the Florida Department of Revenue, the board unanimously elected Commissioner Goodwin to chair the board, with plans to formalize this process annually.
