Crime rates plummet as city expands surveillance network

In a recent government meeting, officials reported significant progress in public safety initiatives, particularly regarding crime rates and surveillance capabilities. The meeting highlighted an increase in the number of camera feeds, which have risen from 1,500 to 1,588, with expectations to reach 1,600 by the end of the week. This expansion aims to enhance monitoring and response capabilities across the city.

The chief of police presented a detailed overview of crime statistics, revealing a notable decrease in various crime categories compared to the previous year. Homicides have decreased by approximately 34%, with 40 reported this year compared to 61 in 2023. Additionally, shots fired calls have dropped by 9%, from 1,936 last year to 1,757 this year.

Further analysis showed a 14% reduction in shootings, with 204 incidents reported in 2024 compared to 238 in the same period last year. Property crimes also saw significant declines: rapes decreased by 23% (from 91 to 70), robberies fell by 23.5% (from 136 to 104), and burglaries dropped by 17% (from 970 to 803). Vehicle burglaries experienced the most substantial reduction, plummeting by 34% from 1,373 to 905.
