During a recent city council meeting, the City of Napa officially proclaimed June 2024 as \"Bridal Month,\" a designation aimed at celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and commemorating the Stonewall Uprising of 1969. Mayor Scott Sedgley, alongside council members, emphasized the importance of this proclamation in promoting equal rights and fostering an inclusive environment for all residents, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
The proclamation highlights the theme for Napa Bridal 2024, \"Love, Light, Liberation,\" which seeks to advocate for love as a fundamental human right and to enhance visibility and understanding within the community. The council urged residents to participate in the upcoming celebrations, acknowledging the perseverance of the LGBTQ+ community in their ongoing fight for equality.
Coach Bailey, director of LGBTQ Connection Napa and chair of the Queer Leaders Coalition, accepted the proclamation, expressing gratitude for the council's continued support. Bailey noted that the city has shown unwavering commitment to inclusion since 2019, and highlighted the positive community response to recent challenges, including acts of anti-LGBTQ+ vandalism.
In addition to the proclamation, Bailey announced plans for a multiuse LGBTQ+ youth center focused on mental wellness, which will provide free clinical therapy and support groups. This initiative aims to ensure that LGBTQ+ youth see themselves represented and supported within their community.
The meeting concluded with a call for community engagement in the upcoming Napa Bridal 2024 festivities, reinforcing the city's dedication to celebrating diversity and fostering a supportive environment for all residents.
