Crime rates surge as calls for service spike 21%

In a recent government meeting, officials presented the monthly statistics for May, revealing significant increases in various crime categories and law enforcement activities. The department reported a 21% rise in call volume, with 3,259 calls for service compared to 2,068 in April.

Part 1 crimes, which include violent and property offenses, also saw an uptick. A total of 61 Part 1 crimes were investigated in May, up from 55 in April. This included 11 violent crimes and 50 property crimes, with larceny accounting for 45 of the property offenses.

Part 2 crimes increased as well, with 219 incidents reported in May, compared to 167 the previous month. Arrests rose by 17%, totaling 244 in May, up from 208 in April. Notably, traffic enforcement saw a dramatic increase, with traffic tickets issued rising by 144% to 561, while parking tickets increased by 10% to 281.

Interestingly, incidents involving the use of force by law enforcement decreased, with only four incidents reported, representing 1.6% of total arrests. Additionally, the department investigated two confirmed shots fired incidents in May, resulting in arrests in both cases.

These statistics highlight a concerning trend of rising crime rates and increased law enforcement activity, prompting discussions on public safety measures and resource allocation in the community.
