City plans urgent replacement of critical neighborhood bridge

The city has announced plans to replace the aging bridge serving the North Brook Charleston neighborhood on Selby Boulevard West, which spans Rush Run. Originally constructed in 1980, the two-span concrete culvert has deteriorated significantly, prompting the need for replacement.

Structural inspections conducted in 2020 revealed serious deficiencies, including spalling, delamination, and exposed reinforcing steel, leading to a low sufficiency rating of 37.2 on a scale of 0 to 100. This rating indicates that the bridge is beyond repair and qualifies for replacement under federal funding guidelines.

The bridge is critical for access to 81 homes located on the west side of the creek, and while it remains safe for travel, its condition has raised concerns among city officials. Currently, a 12-ton weight limit is in place, reflecting the bridge's compromised structural integrity.

City officials emphasized the importance of addressing the bridge's condition to ensure continued access for residents and maintain the roadway's functionality. Plans for the replacement are now underway, with the aim of enhancing safety and infrastructure in the neighborhood.
