New law mandates textured hair training for hairdressers

The meeting also addressed recent legislative changes, notably a reduction in civil penalty authority from $25,000 to $10,000 for all boards, which Carriger noted would not significantly affect the board's operations. More importantly, the board discussed Public Act 2453, which mandates the inclusion of training for individuals with textured hair in hairdresser programs. This legislation requires DPH to collaborate with the board to develop a new curriculum and update existing regulations accordingly.

Board members expressed support for the legislation and discussed the next steps, including determining the number of training hours dedicated to textured hair within the existing 1,500-hour hairdressing and 1,000-hour barber programs.
