Arts leaders demand city honor voter support for funding

During a recent government meeting, community members voiced strong concerns regarding proposed cuts to arts funding and environmental issues linked to Boulder Airport.

Travis Laberge, founder of the Provando School of Musical Arts, passionately addressed the council, highlighting the importance of arts education in the community. He noted that his school serves over 600 students weekly, including those with disabilities and from low-income backgrounds. Laberge expressed disappointment over potential reductions in arts funding, emphasizing that such cuts would undermine the compromise reached with the city regarding the allocation of sales tax revenues. He urged the council to honor the will of the 75% of voters who supported the recent ballot measure aimed at increasing city funding for the arts, arguing that the proposed changes would constitute a \"bait and switch\" that disrespects community commitments.

Following Laberge, Elise Edson raised concerns about the environmental impact of Boulder Airport, particularly regarding noise and lead pollution. She pointed out that these issues significantly affect residents' quality of life and pose health risks, especially to children. Edson called for the council to address these environmental concerns, aligning with the city’s reputation for sustainability and stewardship.
