County faces staggering rise in employee insurance costs

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant increases in insurance costs affecting employee benefits for the upcoming fiscal year. The health insurance premiums are set to rise by 15.9%, amounting to approximately $916 per person monthly, which translates to an additional cost of $5.72 per hour for employees working full-time. This increase reflects a broader trend in the insurance industry, with officials noting that similar hikes are being observed nationwide.

The court approved the renewal of health insurance coverage through Keiko for the 2024-2025 period, totaling $2,650,749.36. Additionally, the workers' compensation coverage was renewed at a premium of $848,585, with costs remaining stable compared to the previous year.

Liability insurance, which encompasses property and casualty coverage, also saw a slight increase due to rising costs associated with auto equipment and drone insurance. The total premium for this coverage is set at $1,615,580. Officials emphasized the importance of these renewals, highlighting that the total insurance costs for the county will reach approximately $5.115 million, solely for employee coverage without including family plans.
