Church Seeks Zoning Change Amid Rising Homelessness Concerns

In a recent meeting, representatives from Reclaimed Church presented a request to the Board of Zoning Appeals to change their zoning classification from C2 Highway Commercial to AC1 Residential Commercial or Neighborhood Commercial. The church argued that this change would better align with the community's needs and the current economic and social landscape.

The church's spokesperson highlighted a significant increase in homelessness in the area surrounding their location, which has led to safety concerns and a rise in litter, including needles and syringes. This uptick in homelessness was cited as a major change since the original comprehensive plan was established. The spokesperson noted that the church has had to engage in regular clean-up efforts and has experienced incidents of break-ins, which they believe are linked to the local homeless population.

The church emphasized that the proposed rezoning would not only fill a currently vacant building but also enhance the neighborhood's curb appeal and safety. They argued that vacant properties often attract undesirable activities, and a new business could provide oversight and improve the area’s overall appearance.

Additionally, the church clarified that while there may be a general decline in church attendance across the region, their specific congregation has not experienced a decrease in membership since they took over the property in 2016. They also confirmed that the building had previously served as a childcare center before becoming vacant.

The Board of Zoning Appeals is expected to consider the church's request, weighing the potential benefits of the rezoning against the existing zoning regulations and community needs.
