In a recent meeting of the Virginia Board of Education, student leaders from the organization MatchUp presented a compelling case for the enhancement of Unified Physical Education (PE) courses. Ronnie Latif, president of MatchUp, expressed gratitude to the board for their support in making Unified PE a course that satisfies health and PE graduation requirements for all Virginia students. This change is seen as a significant step towards inclusivity, particularly benefiting students with disabilities.
Latif emphasized the importance of Unified PE in fostering interactions among students, highlighting the program's role in promoting health and well-being. He acknowledged the guidance of Superintendent Coons and her staff, as well as the encouragement from educators and administrators who have supported their advocacy efforts.
The meeting also featured Scott Brabrand, executive director for the Virginia Association of School Executives (VAS), who commended the board for their collaborative approach and urged them to approve a performance and support framework during the session.
The discussions reflect a growing commitment within Virginia's educational system to enhance inclusivity and support for all students, particularly those with disabilities, through innovative program changes.
