County Engineer Exposes Waste and Delays in Road Maintenance

During a recent government meeting, concerns were raised regarding the management and oversight of road maintenance in Page County. A local official expressed frustration over the lack of action on critical issues, particularly the delayed pavement marking on county roads, which has persisted for two years. The official emphasized that without proper measurement and accountability, operational inefficiencies are likely to continue, suggesting that some supervisors have not been fulfilling their responsibilities.

The discussion highlighted the importance of timely maintenance, with the official noting that inadequate pavement markings pose safety risks, especially at night. The official criticized the county's approach to budgeting and resource allocation, pointing out that funds earmarked for necessary roadwork have been left unspent while issues remain unresolved.

In response to these concerns, Page County Engineer JD King provided an update on ongoing projects, including the completion of fog sealing on M 63 and preparations for upcoming bridge projects. He detailed the costs associated with recent maintenance efforts, including a $200,864 expenditure for fog sealing and an estimated $8,600 for pavement marking across 11 miles of road.

King also addressed questions about the maintenance schedule for pavement markings, explaining that they typically wait several weeks after applying sealant before repainting to ensure durability. He assured attendees that measures are being taken to monitor road conditions and that future projects will include necessary oversight to prevent wasteful spending.

The meeting concluded with updates on various construction projects, including a contract awarded to A&W Enterprises for upcoming work, with expectations for progress by late August. The ongoing dialogue reflects a commitment to improving road safety and maintenance practices in the county.
