Council votes to double property tax relief for seniors

In a recent government meeting, council members approved an $80,000 allocation from the Capital Projects Fund for the design of the Phelps Road Pavement Rehabilitation Project. The motion passed unanimously with a vote of 9-0.

The council also discussed a significant amendment to the Property Tax Relief program for elderly and disabled homeowners. The proposed ordinance aims to increase the local match for property tax credits from 50% to 100%. Currently, individuals with incomes under $22,000 receive $1,250 from the state and an additional $625 from the municipality. Under the new proposal, they would receive an equal amount from both the state and local government, effectively doubling the local benefit to $1,250.

Scott Colby, the assistant town manager, outlined the financial implications of the amendment, noting that the total cost of the program would rise from approximately $305,000 to $434,000, based on the current number of participants. This increase would require a public hearing at the next council meeting.

Councilor Ellerbeld emphasized the importance of the amendment, highlighting that it would significantly enhance the financial support for eligible residents. The council is set to vote on the ordinance after the public hearing, marking a crucial step in providing increased financial relief to vulnerable homeowners in the community.
