Developer seeks approval for controversial three-unit expansion

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around a proposal to convert a two-family residence into a three-unit building in a Residential B zone. The property, located at 59 Old Colony Avenue in Quincy, currently features a two-bedroom and a four-bedroom unit, totaling six bedrooms across approximately 2,100 square feet of living space. The proposed plan includes raising a detached garage, adding an additional 2,100 square feet, and connecting it to the main building.

The new design aims to create a total of three units, with the addition of four bedrooms in the new unit, alongside an open living space and a den. The project would also provide two garage parking spaces and two parallel spaces along the property line. However, concerns were raised regarding the adequacy of parking, given the potential for ten bedrooms across the three units while only providing four parking spaces.

Several committee members expressed skepticism about the size of the proposed development, suggesting that it may be too large for the area. One member noted that the proximity to the T station might not alleviate parking concerns, as it could lead to an influx of residents without adequate parking options.

The committee ultimately decided to postpone the proposal, requesting a redesign that addresses the parking issues before reconsidering the application. A motion was made to extend the review period until October 8, 2024, which was unanimously approved. The discussions highlight ongoing challenges in balancing housing development with community infrastructure needs.
