Funding announced to combat opioid crisis and save lives

During a recent government meeting, officials outlined key funding priorities aimed at addressing the opioid crisis. The discussions highlighted three main areas of focus: performance measures, innovation and evidence-based programs, and strategic partnerships.

The initial funding allocation for the first year is set at $2,489,263, with expectations for additional funding in the coming years, although the exact duration of this funding cycle remains undetermined. Officials noted that multiple notices of funding could be released, providing ongoing financial support for initiatives targeting opioid misuse.

A significant emphasis was placed on performance measures, which are critical for assessing the effectiveness of funded projects. The selected measures aim to demonstrate progress in reducing opioid use and abuse, specifically targeting six key areas: decreasing fatal and non-fatal overdoses, reducing emergency department visits related to opioid use, increasing access to substance use disorder treatment, and enhancing training and prevention programs within the criminal justice system.

As the meeting concluded, participants acknowledged the importance of these funding priorities in combating the opioid epidemic and expressed a commitment to further discussions and planning as the September deadline approaches.
