Kenosha pools struggle to hire lifeguards despite bonuses

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the ongoing challenges of staffing lifeguards for local pools in Kenosha. The city is currently facing a shortage, with only 19 certified lifeguards available, while a minimum of 25 is needed to operate both pools simultaneously. To address this issue, the Parks Department is proposing a bonus incentive for lifeguards, which has previously proven effective in attracting staff.

The proposed bonus structure includes a $200 incentive for full-time employees and a $10 bonus for those who work at least 60 days. Last year, the total expense for bonuses was approximately $6,000, which officials hope will encourage more lifeguards to join the team this season. The department is also planning to conduct surveys to understand what factors are drawing lifeguards to Kenosha and how to remain competitive with neighboring communities.

The city is preparing to offer additional lifeguard certification classes, with the next session scheduled for the upcoming weekend, which could add up to eight more certified lifeguards. However, the ability to open both pools will depend on the successful completion of these classes and the retention of current staff.

Officials emphasized the importance of having both pools operational, citing the positive experiences many residents have had at these facilities. The current hourly wage for lifeguards starts at $16.60 and can increase to around $18, reflecting the city's efforts to enhance compensation and attract qualified personnel.
