Senators demand urgent fixes for hospital facility issues

During a recent government meeting, concerns were raised regarding the operational challenges at the JFL North facility, particularly in light of recent weather events. Senator Maurice James highlighted issues such as leaky roofs and generator malfunctions, prompting a detailed response from Senator Nobel Francis and Daryl Smalls, the executive director of the territorial hospital redevelopment team.

Senator Francis confirmed that the facility has indeed faced difficulties, particularly following a flash flood that exposed several leaks. He assured that the facilities team has addressed these issues, although he acknowledged the need for a senior director of facilities management to enhance oversight and maintenance efforts.

Daryl Smalls elaborated on the situation, noting that the JFL North, completed in December 2020, requires routine maintenance like any other building. He explained that the recent heavy rains exacerbated existing vulnerabilities, leading to leaks that are typical in new constructions. Smalls emphasized the importance of ongoing maintenance for both the roof and the air conditioning systems, which are under strain due to the Caribbean climate.

Regarding the generator issues, Smalls indicated that the facility was originally built with a single generator, but plans are in place to add a second generator to improve reliability. He acknowledged that while routine maintenance is essential, financial constraints can pose challenges to timely repairs and upgrades.

The discussions underscored the critical need for improved infrastructure management at JFL North, as officials work to address the facility's operational shortcomings and ensure better service delivery in the future.
