City implements stricter water conservation measures amid drought

During a recent city council meeting, officials discussed significant updates to the water conservation and solid waste management policies in Glen Heights, Texas.

The council confirmed that the city will continue its annual water conservation measures, which include restrictions on watering between 10 AM and 6 PM. This year, the city is aligning its drought contingency plan with the City of Dallas Water Utilities, increasing allowable water usage reductions across three response stages. The reductions will now be 5% in Stage 1 (up from 1%), 15% in Stage 2 (up from 5%), and 20% in Stage 3 (up from 15%).

In addition to water conservation efforts, the council addressed the solid waste collection contract with Community Waste Disposal, which will see new rates effective July 1, 2024. The proposed changes include a shift to weekly recycling collection, a service not currently included in the contract. The new rate for residents would increase from $16.50 to $18.55 per month if the weekly recycling service is adopted. Alternatively, if the household hazardous waste collection service is removed, the rate would decrease to $17.53.

City Manager Clifford Blackwell emphasized the importance of these changes, noting that the council has expressed interest in enhancing recycling services. The council is expected to make a decision on these proposals in the coming weeks, with discussions ongoing about the potential impacts on residents and the environment.

The meeting also included the reappointment of four members to the Citizens Police Advisory Committee, reflecting the council's commitment to community engagement and oversight in policing matters.
