City Council Considers Major Changes to Cannabis Regulations

During a recent government meeting, discussions centered on two significant topics: parking meter programming and the regulation of recreational marijuana establishments in Revere.

Council members explored the potential for programming parking meters to offer a 15-minute grace period for customers picking up takeout orders. This proposal, inspired by feedback from local business owners, aims to enhance turnover in busy areas. However, officials noted that implementing such a feature would require a technological upgrade costing approximately $60,000. Currently, the existing meters lack the capability for this adjustment, but the idea remains under consideration as a means to improve parking efficiency, particularly in underutilized lots.

The second major topic involved proposed amendments to Title 9, which would allow recreational marijuana establishments in the city. The chief of planning and community development presented a framework that includes a prohibition on social consumption within retail spaces and a proposal to issue three licenses for recreational sales, aligning with state regulations. Councilor Silvestri emphasized the potential revenue benefits, citing Massachusetts' record cannabis sales, while also acknowledging the need for careful planning regarding the locations of these establishments, especially in proximity to residential neighborhoods.

Concerns were raised by Councilor Kelly regarding zoning regulations and the impact on nearby residential areas. She advocated for stricter zoning measures, including a larger buffer zone around designated locations and enhanced notification processes for residents. The council plans to continue discussions on these topics, with a focus on balancing economic opportunities with community concerns.
