Community voices unite to shape Holyoke's policing future

During a recent community meeting in Holyoke, local residents and officials gathered to discuss pressing issues facing the city and the role of the new police chief. The meeting featured a diverse panel, including community members, police officers, and city personnel, who emphasized the importance of public input in shaping local law enforcement strategies.

Colleen Chesmore, a registered respiratory therapist and long-time Holyoke resident, opened the session by welcoming attendees and introducing fellow committee members. Among them were Dorothy Beben and Joseph Zerhide from the Holyoke Police Department, as well as Alan Fletcher, a retired captain, and Kelly Curran, the city’s personnel director.

The primary focus of the meeting was to solicit feedback from residents regarding the challenges they perceive in Holyoke and what they hope the new police chief will prioritize. Attendees were encouraged to share their thoughts within a three-minute time limit, ensuring a wide range of voices could be heard.

Israel Rivera, a resident and former felon, was among the first to speak, highlighting the importance of addressing community concerns directly. The meeting aimed to foster an open dialogue between law enforcement and the community, reflecting a commitment to improving police-community relations.
