Students launch groundbreaking decarbonization plan for schools

In a recent Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) meeting, significant strides were reported in sustainability efforts and community engagement initiatives. Graduate students from the University of Colorado Boulder are collaborating with the BVSD sustainability and energy team to develop the district's first decarbonization plan. This summer, students conducted pre-audits at five BVSD schools, assessing existing sustainability measures such as solar panels, recycling programs, and electric vehicle parking. The next phase involves interviews at the schools and data analysis.

The meeting also addressed pressing concerns regarding school funding, particularly in light of changes to the state funding formula. Board members highlighted the importance of community input in an ongoing adequacy study conducted by the American Institutes for Research, which aims to evaluate the state's public education funding system. Community members are encouraged to participate in a brief survey that will inform recommendations to the Colorado Department of Education regarding equitable educational opportunities.

Additionally, the BVSD Community Leadership Academy is set to begin its third year, offering parents and community members a chance to deepen their understanding of the district's operations and educational framework. The program will feature seven lunchtime sessions from October to April, covering various topics, including academic insights and strategies for building resilient families.
