School board pushes for crucial bond vote amid funding uncertainty

In a special meeting held to discuss updated ballot language for a bond question on the November 5, 2024 election, school officials emphasized the urgency of securing funding for a new high school and a center of excellence. Superintendent Haber highlighted the partnership with the Department of Defense, which would cover 80% of the estimated $240 million cost, leaving the district responsible for $49 million if the bond passes. This initiative aims to replace the aging Academy High School, which requires over $70 million in repairs.

The meeting was prompted by recent developments regarding two ballot initiatives that could significantly impact school funding. Director Becky Allen explained that the board had previously approved bond language but needed to reassess it in light of these new circumstances. The initiatives, if passed, could lower property tax rates and constrain revenue for school districts.

Governor Polis has convened a special legislative session to address these initiatives, with a proposed house bill currently awaiting his signature. The bill's enactment is contingent upon the removal of the initiatives from the ballot, which must occur by the September 6 deadline. School officials expressed optimism that the bond proposal remains viable, contingent on the legislative developments and the upcoming election.
