Funding Crisis Threatens Housing Grants in California

In a recent meeting, representatives from SANDAG and the California Association of Councils of Government (CALCOG) discussed critical funding opportunities and challenges facing regional transit and housing initiatives. The meeting highlighted the allocation of approximately $50 million in federal and state funds from the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TRSIP), which is based on population size within the region. These funds, derived from surplus years, are primarily intended to support various programs through grants.

However, the discussions were overshadowed by California's significant budget shortfall of $58 billion, which has led to proposed cuts in housing budgets by nearly 50%. This reduction poses a direct threat to local initiatives, including a $450,000 grant application from National City aimed at assessing city parcels for potential homeownership development. The grant is currently on hold due to the budget constraints, prompting local officials to advocate for their fair share of funding to address housing needs.

Looking ahead, SANDAG will convene a Mobility work meeting on June 13, where advanced air mobility strategies will be among the key topics of discussion. This meeting aims to explore innovative transportation solutions that could enhance regional connectivity and address ongoing mobility challenges.
