Pardons board hears emotional appeals for second chances

The Pardons Advisory Board convened for its July meeting, focusing on the review of pardon applications from individuals seeking clemency for past offenses. The meeting, livestreamed on Wisconsin Eye and YouTube, was led by Leslie Freehill, Deputy Legal Counsel for Governor Evers, who introduced the board members, including Reverend Jerry Hancock, Judge Jeffrey Kremers, Reverend John MacVicar, and Cindy O'Donnell.

During the session, applicants were reminded to mute their audio and keep their video off until called upon to ensure a smooth livestream experience. Each applicant was allotted 3 to 5 minutes to present their case, which included a summary of their offenses, their post-sentence activities, and reasons for seeking a pardon. The board would then have the opportunity to ask questions before deliberating in a closed session to decide on recommendations to the governor.

The first applicant, Darren Johnson, shared his story regarding a 1995 arson conviction, attributing his actions to substance abuse and personal turmoil at the time. He expressed a desire for a pardon to move forward in his life.

The board's decisions will be communicated to applicants within one to two months, with the governor holding the final authority to accept or reject the recommendations. This meeting marks a critical step in the pardons process, emphasizing the board's role in evaluating the rehabilitation and readiness of individuals seeking a second chance.
