Residents voice outrage over skyrocketing taxes and fees

During a recent government meeting, public concerns regarding rising property taxes and budget allocations were prominently voiced by local residents. Cheryl Bunker, a long-time Orlando resident, expressed her distress over significant increases in property taxes on inherited rental properties, which she stated have risen by over $1,600 in just one year. Bunker highlighted the broader implications of these tax hikes, noting that they contribute to rising rents, making housing increasingly unaffordable for tenants. She urged the council to prioritize infrastructure improvements, particularly in light of increased traffic in her neighborhood due to new developments.

Frank Vertolli, another speaker, raised alarms about a proposed 20% increase in fire millage, which he argued would disproportionately affect senior citizens and families already struggling with fixed incomes. He questioned the necessity of such a steep increase, suggesting that improvements could be phased in more gradually to lessen the financial burden on residents.

The meeting also included a motion to adopt the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025, which reflects an 8.4% decrease from the previous year's modified budget. The budget was ultimately approved unanimously by the council. A reminder was issued for the second and final public hearing on the county's budget, scheduled for September 19, 2024, at 5:01 PM, providing another opportunity for public input on these critical financial matters.
