Safety Concerns Spark Controversy Over Crossing Guard Changes

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the controversial decision to remove a crossing guard from Brandywine Springs School, a move that has sparked significant community concern. Vaughn Bond, the Director of Public Safety, explained that the decision was made in August 2023 due to safety issues, as the crossing guard was not authorized to direct traffic outside of assisting children crossing the street.

Lieutenant Colleen Gilliland, a school crossing guard supervisor, elaborated on the rationale behind the decision, citing the lack of designated crosswalks and sidewalks in the area, which posed dangers for both children and crossing guards. She noted that the crossing guard had expressed feelings of unsafety and had been directing traffic rather than facilitating safe crossings for students.

However, this has raised concerns among council members about resource allocation, as some argued that the police force is already stretched thin and should prioritize law enforcement duties over traffic management.

Councilman Smiley voiced strong opposition to the use of on-duty officers for traffic control, suggesting that it should be handled by off-duty officers in paid positions instead. This sentiment was echoed by other council members who expressed frustration over the perceived misallocation of police resources.
