Health officials warn of COVID and Legionella outbreaks

During a recent government meeting, health officials provided updates on the current state of communicable diseases in the area, with a particular focus on COVID-19 and other health concerns.

Laurie, a health representative, reported that from August 4th to August 17th, there were 28 COVID-19 tests conducted, resulting in four positive cases. This figure does not account for at-home tests that may not have been reported, indicating that the actual number of cases could be higher. To assist the community, officials announced the availability of non-expired COVID-19 test kits, which are being distributed for free.

In addition to COVID-19, Laurie highlighted a small outbreak of Legionella, a bacteria that can cause severe pneumonia and other symptoms such as fever and lack of appetite. Residents were advised to be cautious around stagnant water, which is a common breeding ground for the bacteria.

Furthermore, the meeting addressed concerns regarding West Nile virus, noting that nearby Leominster has reported positive mosquito tests. However, the area remains classified as low risk for the virus.
