Misericordia University celebrates century of transformative education

In a recent meeting, the Luzerne County Council celebrated the 100th anniversary of Misericordia University with a ceremonial proclamation recognizing its significant contributions to higher education. Established in 1924 by the Sisters of Mercy, the university has maintained a commitment to providing accessible learning opportunities rooted in the values of mercy, service, justice, and hospitality.

The proclamation highlighted the university's evolution from its early days, when the Sisters opened schools for children and adults in the coal mining region, to its current status as a comprehensive institution offering over 50 academic programs across three colleges: the College of Health Sciences and Education, the College of Business, and the College of Arts and Sciences.

Misericordia University, which became coeducational in 1979 and attained university status in 2007, continues to uphold its mission of preparing students for lives of leadership and service. The council expressed its heartfelt congratulations and appreciation for the university's century-long dedication to education and community service. A representative from the university was present to receive the proclamation, marking a significant milestone in its storied history.
