Road Shutdown Sparks Traffic Chaos and Safety Concerns

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the ongoing traffic issues stemming from the closure of State Route 221, located southwest of Doe Run. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) shut down the route for approximately two months, leading to increased traffic on Buck Mountain Road, which is not designated as a detour route.

Local officials reported receiving numerous complaints about heavy truck traffic and speeding in the area. Observations indicated that over 100 vehicles passed through Buck Mountain in just a 30-minute peak period, raising concerns about safety and road conditions.

To address these issues, officials suggested the possibility of involving local law enforcement to help regulate speed. However, there was uncertainty about the extent of enforcement measures that could be implemented. Discussions included the potential installation of speed bumps as a deterrent, although no concrete plans were established.

MoDOT representatives acknowledged that while detour signage was in place, it may not have been sufficient to guide drivers effectively. They emphasized that detours must be routed through state highways, as county roads and city streets cannot be officially designated for detours.

Additionally, officials noted that a box culvert on Buck Mountain is not designed to support heavy trucks, particularly those weighing up to 80,000 pounds. In anticipation of the increased traffic, local sign crews had updated speed limit and hazard signs prior to the road closure.

The meeting highlighted the challenges faced by local authorities in managing unexpected traffic patterns and ensuring public safety during infrastructure projects.
