Commissioners face backlash over controversial housing development plan

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the findings of a traffic study related to a proposed multifamily development in Peoria. The study, conducted within the last year, indicated that the development would generate approximately 87 trips during the morning peak hours and 60 trips during the evening peak, totaling around 1,300 trips over a 24-hour period. This figure reflects the expected increase in traffic due to the new project, which is considered a lower trip generator compared to commercial developments.

Commissioner Wayman Powell expressed support for the project, emphasizing the need for diverse housing options for younger residents in Peoria. However, he acknowledged significant public opposition, noting that many residents were unaware of the project until recently. He highlighted the importance of public comment in the decision-making process and suggested the possibility of continuing discussions to allow more community input.

Commissioner Myers raised concerns about the volume of opposition received, indicating that interest in the case had fluctuated over time. He noted that while the city follows extensive notification protocols, including outreach to residents within 600 feet and homeowners' associations within a mile, there had been a recent surge in opposition letters, with additional submissions arriving even on the day of the meeting.
