Peoria residents demand more grocery options amid closures

During a recent Peoria city council meeting, residents voiced concerns about the diminishing availability of grocery stores in South Peoria, particularly following the planned closure of the Safeway at 107th Avenue and Olive. A local resident highlighted that this closure would leave only one grocery store south of the railroad tracks, significantly impacting the community's access to essential services. The resident urged city officials to collaborate with economic development teams to address this issue, especially as new apartment complexes are being constructed in the area.

In response, the city manager provided updates on various community initiatives. Notably, Deputy Chief Doug Steele of the Peoria Police Department received the Hall of Fame Award at the 2024 Arizona Law Enforcement Torch Run State Conference, recognizing the department's efforts in fundraising for Special Olympics, which totaled approximately $19,500 in the past year.

Additionally, the Peoria Fire Medical Department celebrated the graduation of 15 new recruits, enhancing the city's public safety resources. The meeting also featured announcements of recent ribbon cuttings for new businesses, including a Dutch Brothers coffee shop and Genesis of Peoria, a luxury vehicle dealership.

The city manager encouraged residents to provide feedback on desired retail businesses in Peoria, with a deadline for submissions set for September 15. This initiative aims to ensure that the growing community's needs are met as new developments continue to emerge in the area.
