Volleyball Courts Face Safety Concerns Amid Maintenance Debate

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around the condition and usage of local volleyball courts, as well as plans for new multi-use fields. Tana, a representative from a local volleyball program, expressed concerns about the safety of the sand courts, citing hard-packed sand that could lead to injuries during practice. She requested assistance in maintaining the courts, specifically asking for the sand to be tilled to improve its condition. Tana also sought a waiver for the $1,400 fee to use the courts for seven days, emphasizing the importance of beach volleyball in enhancing skills.

Officials acknowledged the courts' poor condition, noting that recent drainage work had left the sand compacted and unsuitable for play. They discussed potential solutions, including adding more sand and creating wind barriers to prevent erosion. However, they highlighted the need for a long-term plan to address the underlying drainage issues that have plagued the courts, suggesting that relocating the volleyball courts might be a viable option.

In addition to the volleyball court discussions, the meeting also covered plans for new multi-use fields in the southwest corner of the venue. Initial estimates for the project, which includes sod, sprinklers, and fencing, totaled approximately $350,000. Officials are exploring funding options to help offset costs and are considering the logistics of grading and leveling the area.

The meeting concluded with a motion to waive the volleyball court fee while committing to minimal maintenance work to ensure safety. The discussions reflect ongoing efforts to improve local sports facilities and address community needs.
