Housing bond aims to empower first time black home buyers

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the proposed housing bond, known as Prop 442, which was introduced in November 2022. The bond allocates a total of $20 million, with $7 million specifically designated to assist eligible first-time Black homebuyers within city limits. This initiative aims to provide down payment and closing cost assistance, addressing barriers faced by these buyers in the housing market.

The meeting highlighted the Community Homebuyer Assistance Program (CHAT), established in 1998, which supports middle-income households by offering a one-time benefit to help cover upfront costs associated with home purchases. This program has created a revolving loan fund utilizing general fund dollars, ensuring ongoing support for eligible families.

Officials presented a framework for the new program features and sought feedback from attendees. They noted that some initiatives are already in place, while others are under consideration or beyond their control. The meeting underscored the importance of community input in shaping the future of housing assistance programs, as officials aim to enhance accessibility for prospective homeowners.
