Lynn Schools launch innovative language learning program

The Lynn Public Schools have launched an innovative language learning initiative using Rosetta Stone, a program that has been in existence for over 30 years. This initiative aims to enhance language acquisition for students and families, allowing learners to progress at their own pace and access the program from home. The program integrates speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, aligning with the WIDA frameworks and incorporating real-world scenarios.

During a recent government meeting, educators highlighted the program's benefits, including its analytics features that enable teachers to monitor student progress and tailor instruction to address specific learning gaps. The initiative is designed as a supplemental resource rather than a common curriculum, providing additional support for language acquisition outside the core curriculum.

As of May, 16,000 students have been rostered into the program, with families also encouraged to participate. The rollout included training sessions for family and community coordinators to facilitate communication and support for families navigating the program. Currently, students identified as English learners are enrolled in English courses, while English-speaking students are placed in Spanish courses, with options to switch languages.

The program has already seen significant engagement, with over 100 hours logged in English and 61 hours in Spanish since its launch. Additionally, 737 families have registered, with a variety of languages available for selection. The school district plans to continue offering professional development for teachers to familiarize them with the platform and enhance their ability to support students.

Looking ahead, the district is committed to gathering feedback from families and students to refine the program and ensure it meets the needs of the community. Plans for summer sessions to assist families with the program are also in place, demonstrating a proactive approach to fostering engagement and language learning within the Lynn community.
