Hawaii launches microgrant program to boost food security

The Hawaii Department of Agriculture has announced the opening of applications for its microgrants for the Food Security program for the fiscal year 2023. The application period will run from July 11 to August 12, 2024. This initiative aims to enhance the quantity and quality of locally grown food through small-scale gardening, herding, and livestock operations, particularly in areas facing significant food insecurity.

During a recent webinar, officials outlined the eligibility criteria and application processes for both individuals and organizations. Individuals can apply through a straightforward online application without the need for insurance or a cash match. In contrast, organizations, including nonprofits and educational facilities, must adhere to a Request for Proposals (RFP) process, which includes a 10% cash match requirement and proof of insurance.

To apply, individuals are directed to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture's website, where they can find the microgrant application form. All applications must be submitted by noon on August 12, 2024, as late submissions will not be considered.

The program is designed to support local food production and address food insecurity, reflecting a commitment to enhancing food security in Hawaii.
